Hello, dear fellow travelers on this journey! Welcome to a new summer series. In this series, we will explore the concepts from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, specifically the eight limbs of yoga and meditation. Throughout each month, we will delve into each limb and how they can be applied to our lives. Our first destination on this journey is Ahimsa.
Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word that translates simply as 'non-violence.' However, it encompasses not only physical violence but also verbal and mental violence. Ahimsa calls for the practice of living a non-violent life both internally and externally.
Let's provide an example of how Ahimsa can be applied to our daily lives. Imagine coming home after a long and tiring day. You are considering cooking for yourself, but your body is resisting due to exhaustion. This is where Ahimsa comes into play.
To practice Ahimsa, you must be non-violent towards yourself. In this situation, you can choose to be gentle with your body and give yourself a period of rest. Being compassionate towards yourself is one of the most important teachings of Ahimsa.
In this first episode of our summer series, we explored what Ahimsa is and how it can be applied. This principle forms the foundation of our yoga and meditation practice and sheds light on other aspects of our lives.
Feel free to share what Ahimsa has taught you in your life. Share your thoughts on how we can better integrate Ahimsa into our daily lives.
Our journey has begun with Ahimsa, the first step of this summer series. In the next post, we will explore the second yama, 'Satya,' which means 'truth.'
